Encinal Cruise / Svendsen's Night 4/19/14

(If you like, you can skip down through the prose and go straight to the pictures below!)

A beautiful, clear and sunny Saturday morning found Freedom Won, Paradesia and Mischief snug at the Encinal docks as the vanguard of Islanders for the Encinal/Svendsen's Discount Night. Vanishing Animal had planned to be there too, until Rick arrived at the boat in Brisbane about 1300 Friday to find winds gusting over 30 for the next three hours and prudently decided to arrive by land yacht instead of single-handing up the Bay. In all we had 20 folks representing 11 Islanders for a great weekend. Here's the list.

As people arrived, we gathered on Encinal's second deck to enjoy each other and watch the activities on the water. There is often rowing practice early mornings in the Estuary, including both dragon boats and rowing shells. There were some of each this morning, and we got a short clip.

Just before lunch, Andrew Nelson, the Director of EYC's Junior Sailing Program stopped by to thank your Association for their continuing support of the program. Andrew presented Commodore Van Mell with this year's T Shirt, which includes the I-36 logo as one of the key sponsors. There were 275 students enrolled in the 2013 program. They also provided "Thank You" plaques for our 2012 and 2013 support.

A delicious lunch followed as we had everyone set up at two big tables with a great view of the water, and plenty of Islander talk to go around.

Then it was time for our Safety & Seamanship Seminar: Crew Overboard Recovery. Dennis Bush, with Judy as the key example, talked the group through one of the better techniques for recovering an overboard person where there are just two of you on board to start with. The technique presented uses the LifeSling equipment consisting of a horseshoe-type sling attached to the boat with a long, floating line. By deploying the sling off the stern, then circling the victim, the sling is brought within reach of the person in the water. Once the overboard person slips into the sling, the person can be pulled back to the boat. then there are several ways to get the person out of the water. The boat sails an approximate "figure 8" path with a reach, a tack, a broad reach and then rounding up around the victim to get the sling within reach of the person overboard. Dennis used the following YouTube video by John Rousmaniere and The Sailing Foundation for the demonstration.

Dennis also handed out a 2 page spread from Latitude 38 that discusses this issue. Here's a link to the PDF section of the March 2014 issue with the page: http://www.latitude38.com/eBooks/2014/L38201403-2.pdf . It's a big large, so after it's loaded go to page 18 of the 64 page section for the article.

A lengthy discussion followed with people adding their comments and additions. Some of them included: hitting the MOB button on your GPS to mark the spot; throwing an additional horseshoe or cockpit cushion over for the victim to swim to while waiting for the sling to be brought back; the merits of approaching with the victim on the weather side (as shown in the video) or the leeward side; using the engine; and the likelihood of a wife being able to hoist a husband up on board. The good discussion also evolved into the underlying assumption that the person left on board would know how to sail the boat,(or start and run the engine)to follow the pattern described in the video. A few wives admitted that they would have a hard time with either the sailing or the engine because they had not practiced that very much. It was agreed that "boat handling" might be a good addition to a future Safety & Seamanship seminar -- particularly if the mentor was not the spouse of the trainee! Comments and suggestions would be appreciated!

Then it was time to head on over to Svendsen's for their much appreciated Discount Night. We were greeted with a modest selection of nibbles and beverages to get things started, but the serious shoppers had their lists ready. The pictures below show just some of the bigger displays to choose from. It was a good hour and a half before we gathered to thank Svendsen's for this ten-year tradition and lug our loot back to cars and boats.

Finally, back downstairs in EYC's Regatta Room Charles and Kathryn, with help from Dennis & Judy, rolled out the Tucker's Ice Cream - locally made in Alameda. To go with the Chocolate, Strawberry and Vanilla choices, there were chocolate-dipped cones, caramel and chocolate sauces, chocolate and vanilla Oreos and, thanks to Rick Vulliet,a small bottle of Chamborg, raspberry liquor, to drizzle over everything. It wasn't long before all three half gallons were gone. For a few die-hards, Rick Vulliet set up the Robert Redford "All Is Lost" video. It's hard to watch with a full stomach of ice cream!

So another great Islander 36 event came to a close. Enjoy the pictures.
