Fall Meeting November 4, 2006

(If you like, you can skip down through the prose and go straight to the pictures below!)

What a wonderful, warm, special way to wrap up the season. The Fall Meeting at the Oakland Yacht Club had it all - even including a shimmering full moon sparkling on the Estuary waters. Everyone looked great "with clothes on" dressed for the evening, leaving most salty gear stowed in the lockers. Candles lit the tables and the lights were dimmed. We owe an enormous amount of gratitude to Laurie and Smokey Stover and those who helped decorate, coordinate and get the evening at OYC underway.

Eighty-four folks representing 32 boats exchanged greetings, nibbled on goodies, checked out the extensive Door Prize table and the trophies. It was particularly nice to see tables full of boat crews - Tom Cat, Freedom Won & Pacific High in particular were well represented. Laurie Stover, Rhonda Shea and Karen Damsen (all looking delightful) greeted arrivals with their names tags and wrote names on their Door Prize raffel tickets. This proved a welcome change for speeding up the identification and delivery of Door Prizes throughout the evening. Here's our wonderful crowd.

Commodore Tim Shea kept us on schedule as Oakland YC served up a wonderful dinner. The prime rib was perfectly cooked, as were the salmon and chicken picatta. Starting with a crisp salad and finishing with a chocolate mousse rounded out the meal.

Maureen Drotleff started out the evening's fun with the Furry Photos contest. First she showed all of the slides for the crowd to see. Then a repeat run-through with calls for applause determined the winners. The vote for the most favorite photo was by listening to the sounds of applause; it was VERY close, but in the end, 'Jack' of the Vessel Dream Catcher owned by I36 members Vern and Cheryl Verling was declared the winner. The audience just couldn't resist Jack in his South of the Border outfit complete with sun glasses asking 'Does anyone need a margarita?' First place by wide acclaim went to "Jack", Vern Verling & Cheryl Lawson's furry mate aboard Dream Catcher.

As I mentioned, it was VERY close, so close in fact, that every participant received a gift just for sending in their photos. For those furry sailors who either live out of town or their owners didn't attend the Fall Meeting, they will be receiving their participation gift in the mail.

Our Furry Photo contest also gave the I36 organization an opportunity to feel connected to all of our members across the country. Each of you made this an amusing event and gave us the opportunity to not only indulge our pets and show them off, but to also pay tribute to our little furry friends who now sail in heaven. Thank you all for sending in your photos and to all the 'judges' in attendance at the Fall 2006 meeting.

Ron Damsen delivered the Membership Report for Linda McClellan, sharing the great news that we have 216 members from 34 states. He went on to add that our Treasury is in good shape too. Kathryn Munn Hodgkins and Sylvia Stewart gave their Newsletter report - and received a hearty round of thanks for all their efforts.

Rick Van Mell noted in his Webmaster's report that we now have over 8600 pictures on our site, spread among 259 pages of information. Given that each picture also has a small thumbnail, and, starting this year, a small html file to go directly from picture to picture, there are over 19,000 image files. We've still got plenty of space left, so, as Rick says, "Keep those pictures and stories coming. It's your Association, and your input that keeps it strong."

Rick also took time to thank our Non-Resident Members for their continuing contributions to our knowledge base, and singled out two for special recognition. Trevor Evans was thanked for setting up our Yahoo Help.Islander36 email account that collects the responses to our general emails to the membership. This can be sorted by subject matter so you can follow the various responses and go back and find something of interest. Bert & Carey Vermeer were thanked for their two years of organizing the Canadian All Islander Rendezvous at Telegraph Harbor, Thetis Island, BC. Their efforts are a model for anyone else around the country who would like to pull together Islander 36, and other Islanders if you like, to share a weekend of fun.

2007 Officers were elected by acclamation:

Commodore Art Fowler
Vice Commodore Ron Damsen
Secretary Judy Bush
Treasurer Dan Knox
Measurer Kris Youngberg

Fleet Captain Michele Williams
Cruise Captain John Melton
Newsletter Kathryn Munn
Memberhip Chair Bob Knickerbocker

Then it was on to a fun and festive awarding of prizes to our season's winners and a most bountiful supply of Door Prizes. Betsy Fowler took on the Herculean task of soliciting, getting and organizing the Door Prize process and made it seem so easy this year. The door prize festivities were held throughout the evening and Betsy says thank you one and all to those who donated items. They were fantastic, ingenious, wonderful and hopefully have made many people happy. Writing people's names on their tickets before they went into the bowl really helped. When a ticket was pulled no one had to look for numbers - the winning name was right there. Then Betsy had helpers deliver the prize directly to the winner at their table -- saving lots more time -- while going on to pick the next prize delivered by a second helper.

Some of you may have seen Betsy pull a ticket out of the bowl, look at it and throw it back in the bowl. Hindsight being what it is, she should have set it aside. You see, it was her name! The VERY FIRST ONE drawn. She couldn't believe it. Later in the evening it happened again. When she finally got settled on the boat that night she realized she'd never made mention as to why she'd tossed them back "in the ring" and you marvelous members not only deserved but needed to know the reason!

Betsy also once again pointed out the businesses that have continued to support us throughout the years and how very, VERY grateful we are for their help over the past few years in giving the Islander 36 Association some incredible gifts for our door prizes. Please, oh PLEASE make mention of it the next time you choose to do business with them. Our members made many significant contributions too! Here's the whole list:

While it's no secret that Barry & Sylvia won the Season's Championship on Tom Cat, and Steve Schneider's Absolute won the Nationals Regatta, it was Michele Williams winning the Perpetual Crew Trophy for her work as crew boss on Pacific High which earned a 3rd place for the season. The Chuck Winton Cruising Award went to Ron & Karen Damsen aboard Woodbine, and a special award was given to John Melton, Freedom Won, for making all of the races and all of the cruises -- what a guy!!! Boy are we glad to have him as 2007 Cruise Chair.

Finally, the Schneider Trophy for dedicated service to the Association was presented to Art Fowler for his years of service -- and returning to take the Commodore position for a second time. Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to Joseph Krensavage for his work as Fleet Captain in raising the level of racing over the last two years, and to Smokey & Laurie Stover for two wonderful years of creative cruises and their dedication to including kid activities. Then new Commodore Art Fowler called up 10 past Commodores that were present and welcomed Tim Shea to the Past Commodores' Club with his own Certificate of Apprciation.

So enjoy the pictures, relive a wonderful evening if you were there, and think about how you can arrange to attend a Spring or Fall Meeting, or any of our race or cruise events next year. It was a very special, warm and friendly night, a hallmark of Islander 36 gatherings. See you next year!

Staff Welcoming Address - by Art Fowler

While I’ve got you up here I’d like to present each one of you with a token of my appreciation for volunteering to help me keep this organization and its assets in the pristine shape they are as I assume the Commodore’s job. There’s a lot of work to be done, more than any one person could possibly do by himself, unlike the last time I held this position when I also did the newsletter and the Fleet Captains’ job as well. A quick check those Newsletter archives will reveal how thinly staffed we were at that time.

But not this time, not the second time around. If I didn’t learn anything from my previous experience, this time I hope to depend on my staff to help me more than SCRAPE by; sort of like my sailboat. Sometimes when you’re placed in charge, you have to SCRATCH through an old crusty surface, ie long established practices, to get down to stronger underlying substrata, before you can renew the organization with a fresh clean look; sort of like my sailboat. One has to be sure the outward appearance is not MASKING an underlying problem; sort of like my sailboat. But if I were to WAX on even longer, I’d be SPONGING off someone else’s time. I’ve only VARNISHED over my concerns with a rather broad BRUSH approach.

So let me see. Things to be concerned about are: SCRAPING by, SCRATCHING the surface, MASKING a problem, SPONGING time, VARNISHING over, and a broad BRUSH approach.

So with these gifts, I’ve provided you with some resources to help deal with these concerns. and if we meet at my boat each time we employ them, it will greatly enable you to help your Commodore to accomplish the work that lies ahead of him in the upcoming season. So, I would like you to go ahead and open your gifts at this time. ……………. ……………………………………………………………….. As they would say in the United States Navy, "Liberty expires on board Zenith at 0800 tomorrow morning." Be there and be ready to go to work.
