Fall Meeting & Winners Dinner
Oakland Yacht Club
November 1, 2008

Neither rain nor wind could keep the hearty Islander fleet from celebrating a great 2008 season at Oakland Yacht Club on November 1st. Rain started on Thursday night and continued right through Saturday with some occasional heavy downpours. At one point about nine points were going to be dockside starting Friday night, but as the weather forecast firmed up for a soaking only Skipper & Nancy Wall brought Snowflower dockside, and Ron & Karen Damsen did the same with Woodbine.

So Friday developed into a fun potluck aboard Woodbine with her complete cockpit-covering bimini top. Brigid, Luna Sea and Freedom Won live right down from the guest dock at Marina Village right next to Oakland YC, so they could attend without having to leave their slips. Put that group together and you get great food. Nancy brought pea salad to add to Karen's green salad and fresh, baked-aboard rolls to go with a simmering selection of soups: Bean soup, Taco soup; and Corky's Chicken Soup. Dan & Myphi brought wine, and John Melton cheered everyone on. Karen topped it all off with more fresh-baked goodies from Woodbine's oven: oatmeal raisin & chocolate chip cookies!! Good eats!

By early afternoon Friday a core crew gathered upstairs at Oakland Yacht Club to set up for the festivities. Joining Laurie & Smokey Stover joined Karen & Ron, and Nancy & Skipper Wall to set up the prize table and other decorations. Oakland Yacht Club Manager Craig Wong and Food & Beverage Manager Elaine Mendes had whipped the dining room into great shape with a dozen round tables in place. Rick & Sandy Van Mell, Art & Betsy Fowler, Nanci Melton and Michele Williams all showed up to help too. Twenty feet of table was hardly long enough to hold the Door Prizes and Racing & Cruising awards. The OYC staff adroitly set the tables around Laurie's stunning candle and shell centerpieces, the our Islander crew placed individual place cards with the color of the large background "3I6" logo signaling that person's entree. With the candles lit and a bounty of nibbles, including sushi rolls, set by the windows by 5:30, everything was ready for the fun to begin.

The parade of people up the stairs grew steadily and it wasn't long before the bar was full and the nibbles diminishing at a great rate. A long loop of pictures from the All Islander Rendezvous cycled on the screen as everyone checked out the Door Prizes and trophies on the long table.

In total, 68 folks representing 29 boats showed up and exchanged greetings, nibbled on goodies, and generally had an enjoyable and relaxed time. As best we could tally, they're listed below. Names in ( ) were either not scheduled to attend or couldn't make it at the last minute, but they were certainly there is spirit, so they are included in the list.

Elaine skillfully moved the whole crowd to the tables to get dinner under way right after 6:30. A light salad started things off, followed by the chosen entrees of Tri tip, Salmon, chicken or Vegetarian. The excellent entrees didn't need any help, but the bottles of red and white wine on the tables were sure appreciated. A raspberry sorbet topped it all off.

Commodore Damsen introduced Karen, Laurie and Betsy to get the Door Prize drawings under way as soon as people were seated. We're hoping for a final count, but indeed, door prizes went on all evening. Karen & Laurie hand pre-written each person's name on the back of their Door Prize tickets - one ticket per person - and that made pulling and identifying winners a snap. This year we had an extraordinary quadruple grand prize set. So special were these, that everyone's ticket went back into the bowl for the final drawing -- so if you'd won a T-Shirt earlier, you were still in the running for one of the top four.

The coveted KKMI Free Haul Out bottle of wine was augmented this year with a KKMI Knife and a free coat of bottom paint! And, just when you think things couldn't get better, there was Tim & Rhonda Shea's Tahoe cabin available for a long weekend. Then, from Bill Ray, a long stay at their Texas Ranch near Texoma. Last up was a week at Rick Vulliet's place in Hawaii! Now aren't you sorry you missed this one?!

Here's the whole Door Prize List.

Of course there was some fun business too. The Fall Meeting is also our Winner's Dinner - time to celebrate the year's victors. that included Season's Championship winner Tom & Dave Newton aboard Captain Hooke, and Kit Wiegman who won the Nationals Regatta for the second straight year with Cassiopeia. The Crew Award went to Marcelo Segura aboard Kris Youngberg's Tenacious. The cruising Award went to Skipper and Nancy Wall whose Snowflower is the stalwart anchor of many and many a cruise. The Schneider Trophy, for outstanding contribution to the Association went to Tim & Rhonda Shea.

The main order of business, and the official purpose of the Fall Meeting, is to elect Officers for the 2009 season. Your 2009 Officers are: Commodore Corky Stewart, Vice Commodore Michele Williams, Treasurer Dan Knox, Secretary Judy Bush, Measurer Kris Youngberg, Past Commodore Ron Damsen, Fleet Captains David & Tom Newton, Cruise Chair Team Carol Williams & Anna Stewart, Membership Chair Bob Knickerbocker, Newsletter Editor Kathryn Munn-Hodgkins, and Webmaster Rick Van Mell.

Oh, so you were wondering who got the big Door Prizes? He swears there were no strings pulled, but new Commodore Corky Stewart drew the KKMI Haul Out; Jim Higdon got the Shea's Cabin; Rich Shoenhair pulled the Texas Ranch; and Captain Hooke crew Ely Gilliam is off to sunny Hawaii.

So enjoy the pictures. We're looking forward to seeing all of our members for at least one function in 2009, and hopefully we'll have new members to join us a s well. Our members outside the immediate Bay Area are always welcome to let us know when they are coming to town and we'll do our best to get them out on the water. Now you and your family have a happy and safe holiday season, and we'll see you at the Spring Meeting, March 14th 2009!
