Half Moon Bay - Labor Day 2016

(If you like, you can skip down through the prose and go straight to the pictures below!)

We had seven Islanders lined up to participate in the Labor Day Half Moon Bay cruise out the Golden Gate. Then NOAA, with an abundance of liability-based caution, rattled the fan with small craft notions and, wizely, three Islanders declared victory and remained at their docks. That left just one stalwart Islander, Comodore Sunan & Bill Nork's Zenith, to enjoy what turned out to be a delightful sail down the coast, while three others arrived by land yacht.

The tally of boats is below, and here is Bill's recap of the weekend:

"Thanks to all who made the sail and drive to Half Moon Bay For the EYC/Islander 36 cruise-in and dinner! All of the small craft advisories and other warnings turned out to have predicted a lot more wind than we actually had. Most folks could have used more wind and ended up motoring a good bit of the way. On the return trip, the Golden Gate produced the usual 20 knots in the slot, but as far as a few hundred yards outside the Gate it was almost dead calm. Some sun on the way down and very sunny on the trip home.

One thing to note, the coastal forecast predicts winds from the coastline to 10 miles out. It was pretty calm near the coast, while some of the buoy readings like the SF Buoy and Half Moon Bay buoy showed 15-20 knots. I imagine the Weather Service broadcasts the highest winds forecast in the 10 mile zone, hence the windier predictions?

Anyway, I think a good time was had by all - Half Moon Bay Yacht Club was lots of fun day and night, and the restaurants and shops were all in full swing with big crowds all weekend. The folks at Mezza Luna took care of us well on Saturday night, and no one left hungry!"
