Get tips for better sail trim and faster sailing from Bay area sailmaker Jocelyn Nash of Quantum Sails and winning I-36 Skippers Rich Shoenhair and Barry Stompe. Combine a morning of shore talk with an afternoon of practice with mentors on board your boat to give you some pointers for making her go faster (and safer!) The Islander Fleet Sail Trim Clinic, Saturday, April 8th at the Golden Gate Yacht Club is your chance. It's great for cruisers as well as racers. Cruising skippers are encouraged to come - either bring you own boat, or crew for the day with a racer. We'll have a full day of activities with classroom, dockside and on-the-water coaching. This is one you don't want to miss if you can possibly make it. Fleet Captain Joseph Krensavage organized this great event, but will be out of town, so Rick Van Mell will handle logistics and introduce our featured speakers. Mentors and coaches from the fleet that Joseph is trying to round up include proven winners Rich Shoenhair, Jim Robinson, Don Schumacher, Peter Szasz, Lou Zevanov, Barry Stompe, and Rick Van Mell. Here's the drill: Report to Golden Gate YC at 0930 - either bring your boat, or come by car. Tie up, say "hi" to your friends and get registered, coffed, sandboxed and in your seats by 1000. (You can come Friday night if you want.) From 1000 to 1100 we'll be in a classroom setting reviewing the day's agenda and talking about sail shape, how they drive your boat, and how to set your main & jib for different situations. From 1100 to 1200 we will be dockside with one boat to show us hands-on what we talked about in the classroom: how to set up your sails. You'll get a quick lunch break from 1200 to 1300. There will be a charge of about $15 per person for lunch and to cover some of the cost of materials provided. Then it's time to cast off as close to 1300 as possible and get out to the sailing area in front of the club. About the first 6-8 boats that sign up will likely have their own coaches on board. With a little luck, we may have an inflatable to coach from the water, and possibly even take skippers off their boats to see how their sails are set up. We'll practice sail-setting until about 1415. At 1415 there will be a Warning signal, followed by three 5 minute start sequences initiated at 1420, 1430 and 1440. The third start sequence will begin a race at 1445 to Blackaller Buoy and back. times may chane a bit, and starts will be called on VHF Ch 72, so keep a close radio watch. You've then well-earned a return to the dock, between 1530 & 1600 for libations, celebrations and stories about what you've learned - and, complements of Rich Shoenhair, maybe even a fun Warren Miller film "Against the Wind". So..... if you don't want to be left ashore, you'd better fill out the participation form below - first come, first served! If we get more boats than we have on-board coaches for, we'll assign coaches to the newest racers first. Skippers may want to come and just listen to the talks and serve as crew members on another boat. To be fully crewed for good racing, it's recommended a boat race with 5 or 6 (or even 7) crew members, so it's likely we'll find room aboard a boat for those that want a place. Welcome aboard for a great 2006 season with the most vital "grand old fleet" on the Bay!
