Presidio YC Paris Dinner 4/11/26 |
30 knots of wind and feet of snow in the Sierras didn't stop a dozen of your Islander fleet members for showing up for Presidio Yacht Club's Paris Dinner. Though nobody sailed in, and Rich & Takae from Tacoma Blue and Jim Mullarkey of ex-Kindred Sprits didn't make it, Bella Luna, Kapai, Maggio, Vanishing Animal, White Horses and Zenith were all represented.
The Presidio team put together a wonderful dinner starting with generous hors de oeuvres including Prosciutto Ham and French Brie. Then on to Le Plat Principal: Golden Chicken Cordon Bleu finished with a velvety Beurre Blanc white wine reduction; Les Accompagnements: Rich, buttery Potatoes au Gratin and a classic Green Bean Casserole; finished with a delicious Décadent Crème de Pots au Chocolat.
Then we were treated to a presentation by Meghan Hoist, PhD of the UC Davis Ocean Science Expedition Academy on the history of sharks populations and fishing in San Francisco Bay. Littd did we know that way back in 1928, Mr. RC Pell landed an 11 foot, 464 pound Bluntnose sixgill shark near Sausalito! Or that in a 1984 survey, Leopard sharks made up 40% of the shark population, followed by Brown smoothhouds at 23%, 18% Dogfish, and 8% Sevengills. But even more amazing was that from 1937 through about 1943 millions of pounds of soupfin sharks were landed each year because they were determined to a great source of Vitamin A! However, like so manyother stories, the over=fishing basically wiped out the popultion and by the 1948 survey, there were only 1% of the shark population.
All in al, for those that make it through the drenching rain and wind it was a very fun evening. Super thanks to Bob DaPrato for rounding up our Islander members, and the wonderful, warm hospitality of Presidio YC for a special treat.
